JR East Ticket Refund FAQs

Eki-net cancellations, Hayabusa all-reserved rules, and Tokyo station procedures.

01.How much is the cancellation fee for JR Shinkansen and Limited Express tickets?

The Basic Fare (Joshaken) has a static ¥220 cancellation fee. Reserved seat surcharges incur a ¥340 fee up to 2 days before departure, and a 30% penalty (minimum ¥340) from the day before until departure time. Non-reserved surcharges incur a static ¥220 fee.

02.What is the refund rule if a Shinkansen or Limited Express train is delayed by 2 hours (120 mins)?

Under JR Passenger Operating Rules Article 284, if your train arrives 120 minutes (2 hours) or more late at your destination, 100% of the Limited Express surcharge is refunded. The basic fare is retained as point-to-point transportation was fulfilled.

03.What happens if I miss my reserved Shinkansen train (No-Show)?

After scheduled departure, the reserved seat surcharge is completely forfeited (0% refund). However, your basic fare ticket remains refundable (minus ¥220 fee), or you can board the non-reserved cars of any later Shinkansen on the same day for free.

04.How does SmartEX cancellation work and what is the fee?

SmartEX overrides the standard 30% penalty. Unprinted ticketless reservations can be cancelled in the app up until departure time for a flat ¥320 fee per seat. Once physically printed, standard station window rules apply.

05.Can I get a refund on an activated Japan Rail Pass?

No. Once activated, nationwide and regional JR Passes are strictly non-refundable with zero extensions for delays or weather disruptions. Prior to activation, official JRPR passes can be cancelled for ¥560, or agency vouchers for a 10% fee.

06.How do I refund an IC card like Suica or ICOCA?

Standard Suica (JR East) or ICOCA (JR West) cards can be surrendered at ticket offices for a ¥220 admin fee deduction from the stored balance plus full return of the ¥500 deposit. Tourist cards (Welcome Suica, PASMO Passport) are strictly non-refundable.

07.What is the refund rule if a train is cancelled due to a typhoon or operational fault?

When JR cancels a train, passengers receive a 100% full refund of all fares and surcharges with ZERO handling fees. Physical tickets can be refunded at any JR station window within 1 year.
